Does It Really Matter
Did it matter then, she asked herself, walking towards Bond Street, did it matter that she must inevitably cease completely? All this must go on without her; did she resent it; or did it not become consoling to believe that death ended absolutely?Virginia Woolf - from Mrs. Dalloway
Does It Really Matter?
Does it really matter that one day we will inevitably cease completely? Does it really matter that all this will go on without us? Does all this really matter?
What is the real worth of our being here right now at this time of day, in this year and century, and in this era of human history? The first thing we couldn’t do anything about was our being here at this stage of history. We couldn’t choose a lot of things in our being as we are, there is definitely a great controversy about whether we choose when to die or not. However, this doesn’t matter as we all know that we will die one day. It is hard to accept that this world survived a long time before we came to it, and will survive as long as it gets without us when we are gone. It is hard to accept that we will be no more than a memory in someone’s mind, only from time to time. At the moment of death, everyone is surprised that they are actually dying because we think we are too important to die; we are too significant to some extent that the world will lose a lot by losing us. We are right to think that the world will lose a lot when we are gone, but it is inevitable to go; the whole matter is in the time we have today and what we are giving to this world right now while we can.
The world can go without us tomorrow, but not today; not yet. While we are here with blood running in our veins, the world still needs the special gifts we have to give. The real worth of a human is not in how much they can take from the world, but in how much they give. We matter most when we give the most we can give because this is the only thing we cannot disagree about the many different paths that lead to heaven or hell or for some who believe these do not exist in the first place. It doesn’t matter what we believe as we can all feel the same when we give; we can all be satisfied, like nothing else on this earth has the ability to satisfy us as such, when we contribute to drawing a smile on a face that was about to forget what it meant to smile. We can all agree on giving, so let’s agree to give so that one day when we go from this world, we will know that we mattered and all these questions about the reason why we exist will not matter anymore for we will be overjoyed with having been giving. The real worth of a human is not in how much they can take from the world, but in how much they give.
