Poetic Riddle 02

Through the harshest of battles I fought,
But my victory did not keep my chair.
And every detail about my life I wrote;
Away from the lights to hide, I could not bear.

I held a firm handshake with the East and the West.
Yet this fragile bond was destined to swift doom;
For my empire, after me, will have to finally rest-
As the buds of Sam and Ivan were about to bloom.

Through the harshest of battles I fought,

(Actually, Winston Churchill fought the Second World War, which is still considered today, the harshest war in human history.)

But my victory did not keep my chair.

(His country was victorious at the end of the war, and even though he was a major factor of that victory, he lost the elections and couldn’t stay as Prime Minister after the war.)

And every detail about my life I wrote;

(Winston Churchill wrote his memoirs, which are considered among the best autobiographical accounts ever written.)

Away from the lights to hide, I could not bear.

(He wrote everything to tell the world about every single detail that led to his glory.)

I held a firm handshake with the East and the West.

(He is referring here to one of the most famous events in history that took place on February 11, 1945 when Churchill, Roosevelt and Stalin signed the Yalta accords in Crimea, Soviet Union.

Yet this fragile bond was destined to swift doom;

(This fragile alliance did not last for long as it was meant to end, but it was necessary to end the war and defeat Hitler.)

For my empire, after me, will have to finally rest-

(After the Second World War, the British Empire lost its former glory and strength.)

As the buds of Sam and Ivan were about to bloom.

(It was the time for the rise of the next two superpowers: The United States and The Soviet Union.)
