Should We Be With Them

Laugh, and the world laughs with you;
Weep, and you weep alone.
For the sad old earth must borrow it’s mirth,
But has trouble enough of its own.
Sing, and the hills will answer;
Sigh, it is lost on the air.
The echoes bound to a joyful sound,
But shrink from voicing care.

Ella Wheeler Wilcox - Solitude

Should We Be with Them

Should we laugh all the way to make them laugh, or should we go to our empty rooms and cry without anybody seeing us cry? Then we curse them for not being there for us when we cry. Should we be happy for others and hide our sadness inside because nobody wants to hear about it and nobody cares? Should we live endlessly in a sea of lies where one lives and dies without knowing their real colors for it is always what other people want and their happiness always comes before ours? Maybe, we should be happy or sad for the right reasons; for ourselves.

If we start from ourselves, our happiness spreads to the whole world around us; and without meaning so, we make everybody around us happy. If we want to make everybody around happy to feel happy ourselves, let’s go for it and do it because there is nothing to tell a person how to be happy. Everybody knows that at the bottom of their hearts. If we want our happiness to continue forever, let it start with a clear purpose, from ourselves and what we want in this life; not simply to please anybody but ourselves. This might sound extremely selfish, but on the contrary, it is the only way happiness can continue and live because when we base our happiness on others or others base theirs on ours, someone has to melt in the other’s concept of happiness and the very notion of being happy that starts these stories usually end them with much sadness, misery, blame, and regret. While starting the notion of happiness from ourselves only, listening to our voices and nobody else’s, leads us to learn how to be happy and how to let everybody else be happy their own way without having a say in the prescription of their happiness.

Ella Wheeler Wilcox may have been blaming people for leaving each other at the times of sadness and be with each other only at the times of happiness, but the poem is too much dependent on the notion of other people’s happiness and sadness. And to be independent alone is not an option because happiness can never be happy if not shared with others. Let us be interdependent on each other. Be happy with me, but not for me; do it for yourself. Share your happiness with me and I will share mine with you, and you never know what wounds you may cure by just adding a genuine smile to my day. It might be everything I have ever been waiting for. Let us all think about ourselves first, know what we want and what makes us happy, learn how to appreciate ourselves, learn how to respect ourselves, and above all love ourselves. That is the only way this appreciation, love, and respect will spread to the entire world around us. The love that we all need; the only thing that is worth living for; let’s go and get it all for ourselves and don’t worry it is the most contagious phenomenon on earth, love is, it will spread all around.
